In December 1934, Australia lost a sideshow legend when Julius Mitchell, “Milo the Snake Man,” was fatally bitten by a tiger snake during a performance in New South Wales. Despite trying to treat the bite himself, Milo tragically died a day later at Newcastle Hospital.
This incredible, large 1930s hand painted canvas banner captures Milo’s death defying spirit as he wrestles a massive green snake in a gladiator tunic and laced sandals which added a theatrical, mythical element to mask the fact that he was showcasing deadly, native Australian venomous snakes.
A truly spectacular and rare piece from the golden age of Australian carnival history.
